Abstract:
Design of bus terminal within the urban context of Kuala Lumpur. Introduction To The Problem : Most of our local bus terminals exist without proper and intentional design. This situation has created many problems such as traffic congestion, unhealthy environment. Despite its importance (bus service being the most important means of public transport in the country) bus terminal are one of the neglected architectural subject. There seem to be no segregation of user and vehicles. One can say taht our terminals have generally been associated with a chaotic movement of people and business, pollution, stench and all in all, a total degraded environment. Kuala Lumpur faces a serious shortage of space to accomodote an ever increasing number of busses. The thesis proposes to redevelope the existing temporary bus terminal at Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. Objective: (a) To study the planning concept of bus terminal and to related with the situation in Kuala Lumpur. (b) To identify the problem of the bus terminal. (c) To analyse the characteristic of different public transport modes and the relationship to each other. (d) To prepare design proposal for the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur. The thesis is not trying to solve present or future urban traffic problem but to design a public transport building with consideration and attention given to the problem there in arise. Site: The sited is zoned for transportation centre in the Master Plan of Kuala Lumpur, the surrounding development is mainly commercial, office and the Pekeliling high rise residential flats. It located at the northen edge of CBD along the Middle Ring Road. It has good access to local, express bus route and also the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) line, the transfer facilities are easily available. The main factors which influenced the site planning are : (a) The traffic pattern of vehicle surrounding the site; (b) The pedestrian movement, emphasis is given to access from neighboring prescent and future development. Proposal: The design focusses on the circulation system and layout. It also considering the integration of varies aspects of building (structure, services, landscape, signage, finishes, etc). In the final design process, priority is given to the design criteria. My proposal for the development of this site, promoted by DBKL's need to replace the existing temporary makeshit bus terminal, and to rebuilt it, together with consideration of the proposed LRT station located next to the site as an integrated bus and rail interchange, and to finance this with some commersial, office space and recreation development. The new terminal operates for two type of services : (a) Short-haul transit - within area with high travel density such as CBD and housing area (especially north K.L.). (b) Express service for north and eastbound interstate buses. Design Objective: (a) to design an efficient bus terminal, which has sufficient and proper layout of spaces and facilities needed. (b) To segregate and control the user and vehicles circulation inside and outside the building in a healthy and safe environment. (c) To pay attention in the creation of proper internal and external environment which is appropriate to the condition and activities of the bus terminal. Design Approach: First by trying to identify the problem of bus terminal in Kuala Lumpur. A through understanding of the characteristic of transport mode and their relationship. A design consideration to interface the different mode of transport into a new system which the user can enjoy. The challenge to this terminal design is to balance the spaces requirements for a confortable and aesthetically pleasing human environment against the space restraint caurse by vehicular circulation. Conclusion : the proposed terminal building upgrades one of the most important public building which not only cater for the lower income group but also may be for the middle income group. In achieving the objective I have tried to fullfill all their need, although comparatively it may appear to be more costly. My justification is that, it is to this majority of citizen that we should give good architecture.
