Summary

Summary

"Beyond Interdependence shows that the interlocking of the world's economy and the earth's ecology is the new reality of the century. Building on the Brundtland Commission's landmark report Our Common Future, the book extends the Commission's analysis of the issues of global change and the changing international politics of environment. It shows how industrialized nations can take unilateral and regional action to address environmental threats while improving microeconomic efficiency and international competitiveness. It takes account of recent events, including the tidal shift in East-West relations, and the war in the Persian Gulf. With incisive analysis and far-reaching recommendations for policy reform, Beyond Interdependence shows how we can act urgently but intelligently to advance our common future."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Choice Review

Written to extend the analysis of one of the most influential books in recent years (Our Common Future prepared by the World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987), this slim book shows how industrialized nations can take unilateral and regional actions to address environmental threats while improving microeconomic efficiency and international competitiveness. In its five chapters the authors (the former principal author of Our Common Future; a former Dutch minister of housing, physical planning, and environment; and a Japanese professor of technology and international relations) not only demonstrate the importance of environmental threats to the future of world security and the key role of developing countries in reducing those threats, but they also point the way toward strategies for building coalitions for change. Included in the strategies are specific suggestions for the creative use of economic incentive policies and the evolution of international institutions. Every undergraduate and public library with even a passing interest in the international aspects of environmental problems should acquire this book.-T. H. Tietenberg, Colby College
