Abstract:
Being a natural material, the quality of timber is widely variable. The variability may be reduced considerably if timber is-engineered. Glued laminated timber, or glulam, is a good example of reconstitution and often possesses better predictability. However in the absences of an insight study of glulam strength properties, one would have to assume a typical low value in his design. Similar to its basic cosntituent, timber, glulam's most important quality is related to ultimate strength and stiffness. As such, this study has been focused on assessing the ultimate strength and the stress-strain relation of glulam short columns. The timber species used in this study is Light Red Meranti. A mathematical equation is estended and improved based on O'Halloran model to predict the ultimate compressive strength of solid and glulam columns. The results obtained from the thesis indicate that the ultimate compressive strength largely depends on the Modules of Elasticity (MOE) and this influence may be related to the presence of a relatively weak lamina in eachcolumn. Results also show that the effective MOE of glulam column would not be improved by just randomly laminating the laminae. With respects to the results of predicted ultimate compressive strength, the difference is found to be insignificant.
