Abstract:
The Sarawak Land Development Board (SLDB) was established by the Sarawak Government and entrusted with the responsibility to open up and develop areas suitable for the cultivation of crops such as rubber and oil palm. The development stages involved is that of forest clearing until such a time when it is felt that the planted areas should be awarded to settlers. Each settler would then be given a certain planted acreage called a holding. In return, each settler would have pay a certain amount as loan towards the amount spent by SLDB in developing the scheme. This thesis serves to examine and discuss the role played by SLDB towards land development in Sarawak, in particular, its success both interms of total acreage of crops planted and the degree to which it has been able to achieve its objectives. There are a number of problems that has to be faced in the development stages of a new scheme. Some of these are highlighted in this thesis. Finally, there are some suggestions and comments given in the final chapter on some of the ways in which these problems might be solved.
