Abstract:
This paper presents new data on the drop size distribution of tropical rain obtained at Ile-Ife, Nigeria (7.5 degreesN, 4.5 degreesE) using impact-type distrometer. They show a model type distribution which peaks at fairly large drop diameters (e.g. 2mm for rain rates above about 50mm/hr) in approximate agreement with some other data finding has important implications for rain attenuation calculations at EHF and above, where the effect of the small drop portion of the distribution is greatest. A new fitting procedure, called the "moment regression modelling technique" has been employed with the modified gamma distribution to obtain theoretical models for the measured drop size distribution. The theoretical models are in good agreement with the experimental data.
