Abstract:
Muslim shrines are among the more significant Islamic heritage sites found in Cape Town. A total of 25 shrines at 23 sites are scattered around the foot of Signal hill and all the way to Qude Kraal, Constantia along Tokai Road to the west of Cape Town. It is believed that these shrines are burial grounds of leading Muslim missionaries who, among others were from the Malay Archipelago. many of them were arrested for resisting Dutch colonialism and were sent into exile here. Myths and legend attached to these shrines tell of supernatural and miraculous occurances at these sites. They stand as evidences of the earliest Malay settlements in Cape Town as well as provide an insight into the propagation of Islam here
