The principle and practice of generalisation of cartographic elements in an automated system should not be assumed to be the same as those in manual cartography. generalisation procedure should now be redesigned as economically as possible in machine terms. Certain types of generalisation are however mucah more easily and usefully achieve than others by computer. In this discussion, an appraisal of the techniiques and problems of generalisation, especially relating to those presented by computer technology are advanced together with some reference to the requirements of future equipments for the provision of solution to the problems.
