Summary

Summary

Provides answers to important questions concerning the sampling, isolation, and analysis methods used to determine the chemicals of health concern that are in drinking waters, waste waters, and natural waters. Discusses analytical protocols for concentrating organic compounds for toxicity testing, reverse osmosis to isolate organic pollutants from water, and synthetic polymers for concentrating organic chemicals from water. Offers novel methods to isolate and fractionate organic chemicals in water samples, isolation methods to collect large amounts of organic chemicals from water, biological testing of waterborne organic compounds, and the toxicological testing-analysis interface. A valuable reference for researchers involved in environmental toxic contamination analysis and identification, as well as research biologists, pharmaceutical chemists, environmentalists, toxicologists, and pharmacologists.

Reviews 1

Choice Review

A compilation of 36 papers developed from a 1984 American Chemical Society symposium by the same title. Expert authors, from state, local, and federal environmental agencies, review and evaluate various methods for isolating and concentrating trace contaminants from water and discuss analytical protocols for sample preparation and toxicity testing. Case histories on testing for and removing organics from water and wastewater are included, as well as descriptions, by government officials, of the development of US and Canadian drinking-water standards. The 1984 papers were critically reviewed and updated; they include valuable references current through 1985. The quality of the print and figures is excellent. Both editors are active in environmental and analytical chemistry. Suffet has coedited another volume in the ACS series, Treatment of Water by Granular Activated Carbon (1983) and has edited the two-volume Fate of Pollutants in Air and Water Environments (CH, Dec '77 and May '78). The book is aimed at researchers and assumes familiarity with methods of analyzing water. However, it will provide the nonspecialist with useful insight into how analytical standards evolve and is recommended for libraries that support undergraduate or graduate courses in environmental chemistry or public health.-C.C.
