Summary

Summary

Proceedings of a symposium held in San Francisco in April 1992. The urban environment discussed includes homes, yards, gardens, public parks, golf courses, and restaurants. Some common products for the urban market are turf pesticides, termiticides, home and garden pesticides, indoor pesticides, and rodenticides. The papers are divided into five sections, each focusing on a different facet of urban pesticide use: pests and pesticides, dissipation of pesticides, mobility of pesticides, urban pesticides and humans, and urban pesticides and nontarget animals. Choice Review

One of an ever-growing number of books devoted to relevant topics presented at symposia by experts at ACS meetings. This book provides an up-to-date account of a very important area of environmental concern: the dissipation, safety, and results of pesticide use. There is a total of 30 chapters arranged in five sections discussing testing and research done by industrial, academic, and government agency laboratories. Data are explained using graphs, tables, and diagrams with appropriate references. Section 1 includes background information, public concerns, and government regulatory issues. Seven chapters on the persistence and degradation of pesticides make up the second section. Mobility from leaching, runoff, and volatility of pesticides used in urban and suburban areas is discussed in the third section, including agrochemicals and pesticides used in turf management for golf courses or other turfgrasses. The last two sections focus on biological exposure and risk management for humans and animals such as birds and household pets. Covered are the uses of pesticides in home gardens, lawns and landscapes, and indoor exposure areas. A useful reference source for undergraduate, graduate, and industrial research-level libraries. W.
