Choice Review

Repic's title is beguiling. On the one hand, it suggests a monograph for the specialist--case studies in pharmaceutical process development; on the other, what Sandoz (Novartis) Director of Process Research and Development Repic has really done is to produce nothing less than a universal tool for synthetic chemists, wherever they may be. It offers on-the-job training for economic and environmental issues, lab safety, and plant design, while explaining why scaling up is more than multiplying a recipe by a factor. Chapter topics cover impurities, rational drug design and chirality, strategies for synthesis--a chapter that surely would have pleased the author's Harvard mentor (Robert B. Woodward)--the role of isotopes, licensing, and a nod toward the future. The hundreds of references are current through 1996. Obviously a work of love, this small monograph should be lovingly read by all who need to know about synthesis for development or basic research. And what a wealth of great resource material for making up exam questions! A wondrous work for all these reasons.
