"Exercise and sport science" is a relatively new name for the field of study historically referred to as physical education and athletics. It is a complicated area involving sciences such as biology, medicine, mathematics, engineering, psychology, and sociology. Indeed, some of the most important research has been conducted by scholars in these traditional fields. The editors have identified nine subdisciplines for historical review: sport pedagogy, adapted physical activity and education, sport sociology, sport history, philosophy of sport, motor behavior, sport and exercise psychology, biomechanics, and exercise physiology. In an interesting decision, the editors selected scholars from each subdiscipline, not historians, to write the reviews. Due to the scientific complexity, the selection of subdisciplines and authors could be debated by professionals in exercise and sport science, but are generally recognized by professionals and students of the field. The highlight of the book is the rigorous and detailed presentation of exercise physiology, while the weakest presentation is the narrowly focused examination of sport and exercise psychology.
