Summary

Summary

The symposium, held during the 198th ACS National Meeting, was organized as a response to substantial interest in this class of polymers for their distinct relevance to theoretical and applied research in biotechnology, controlled delivery of active agents, and protection of the environment. Papers from the symposium and some from non-participants provide fundamental information on organic and physical chemistry, as well as recent developments in polymer synthesis and modification and new and non-traditional applications of water-soluble polymers, particularly in the health care industry. Choice Review

The 33 papers in this symposium cover many aspects of the chemistry of water-soluble polymers. The first 4 papers, written by the editors, are a good overview of the design and synthesis of such polymers. Most of the other papers are reviews or research reports that are quite focused. Many of the authors work in academic settings but the systems discussed have great commercial interest and application. For example, 6 papers deal with biomedical applications; another is concerned with enhancing oil recovery from wells; 10 papers discuss the physicochemical aspects of aqueous solutions of polymers. The papers are reproduced from camera-ready copy and the appearance varies. Quality of the text and figures is very good and there is extensive documentation. Appropriate for undergraduate and graduate-level libraries where polymers are emphasized.-M. P. Hanson, Augustana College (SD)
