Abstract:
The investment casting process is similar to the ancient 'lost wax' process and is a technique for precision casting of metals specially of intricate design. This theses intends to find out some materials suitable for making small and medium size components using investment casting. Materials studied are natural rubber latex and jelly for pattern die, wax and polystyrene for pattern, plaster of Paris and sand with CO2 process for casting die. From the study and experiments, it was found that natural rubber latex is the better material for the pattern mold compare to jelly. The pattern mold with natural rubber latex made by the dipping process. Wax was found to be a good materials for investment casting if blended with damar to achieve the desired characteristics. Plaster of paris was found the better casting mold material compare to carbon dioxide process mold.
