Abstract:
The fundamental objective of this dissertation was to develop the technology for designing and manufacturing complex shaped filament wound components using a robot. The work involved an investigation into the various resin systems (Heat cure and Ultraviolet Light cure) and glass fiber system suitable for the winding process. The areas covered by this investigation were the relative cure time for each types of resin system, most suitable for fast winding technique, and programming for robot movement. Several types of shapes were attempted using horizontal and vertical winding techniques. Test were also carried out in the ATC laboratory to evaluate the flexural modulas and failure mode for a glass fiber systems. Ultraviolet light curing resin systems were found to be preferable in the winding operation because of their shorter curing time. Polyester A resin system can also be used in this case. However, for the purposes of this dissertation only the ultraviolet light resin system shall be considered. A simple tool was fabricated as a pay-out eye and ultraviolet source holder. The Problems associated with the operation of the winding for the complex shape and curing method were solved with increasing operational experience and practical difficulties were overcome. For instance, it was found that the angle of the winding has to be carefully monitored prior to the operation to avoid damaging the fiber and previous winding cycle.
