Choice Review
Providing ready access to roughly 7,000 terms commonly used in the US or British military vocabulary, this dictionary's main features are compactness and inclusion of nontechnical terms applied in military contexts. Compared with thicker sources (e.g., Stephen F. Tomajczyk's Dictionary of the Modern United States Military, CH, Jul'96, or DOD Dictionary of Military Terms, available over the Web ), Bowyer's dictionary provides briefer, clearly phrased definitions of standard terms, but is far more selective in the inclusion of technical vocabulary such as weapon systems. Although these characteristics increase the work's appeal for nonmilitary readers, at times the phrasing of definitions or choice of terms (e.g., "rape," "activist," "AIDS," even the verb "repeat") moves the military connection past the point of clarity: "rendezvous" is defined simply as a "place where people have agreed to meet up with each other" rather than (citing DOD Dictionary) a "pre-arranged meeting at a given time and location from which to begin an action or phase of an operation." Some of the appendixes are quite useful (e.g., the format for writing military orders, with a complete example), others less so. While recommended as a concise, one-volume dictionary for use in general and undergraduate libraries, this dictionary does not provide the comprehensive or authoritative compilation of technical military vocabulary provided by the works cited above, hence is of limited use for specialized research. ; Stanford University
