The second volume in CRC Press's "Comprehensive Dictionary of Physics" series, this work, like the first volume (The Dictionary of Pure and Applied Physics, CH, Jul'01), is also edited by Basu; the third and last volume, The Dictionary of Geophysics, Astrophysics, and Astronomy, is expected in June 2001. Contributors are scientists at research institutes and universities around the world. The fields covered are condensed matter, fluid dynamics, material science, nuclear physics, quantum mechanics, quantum optics, plasma physics, and thermodynamics. The preface states: "Care has been taken to ensure that old terms are not included and new terminologies are not missed." Most of the 3,000 definitions are supported by equations, formulae, and diagrams. Entries are arranged alphabetically with few see and see also references. Many definitions run a quarter to half a page. The work would have been improved by including appendixes such as a list of abbreviations and acronyms. This is a useful reference source that focuses on a narrow topic. Recommended. N. Zdravkovska Georgetown University
