Summary

Summary

This volume is the only resource that describes and explains in simple, non-mathematical terms the unit processes used to treat both drinking water and wastewater. Designed to meet the information needs of professionals without an engineering background, the text presents each unit process, states what function(s) it performs, illustrates what equipment it uses, and explains what its role is in the process of purifying or cleaning water. In addition, the book places water treatment technologies in the context of overall plant operation. In addition, it explains related topics such as plant management and environmental regulations.

Choice Review

Drinan's book parallels standard works in water and wastewater engineering in organization and subject matter, but with all mathematical and chemical equations removed. The book is well illustrated with both photos and drawings. However, the quality of the many photographs is often poor, having the low-contrast, grainy look of a photocopy. Contrary to the subtitle, the preface more accurately defines the target audience as "those who need to be knowledgeable about water and wastewater processes, techniques, and equipment, but do not work directly with day-to-day treatment plant operations. Municipal managers, departmental and administrative assistants, equipment sales or marketing personnel, and customer service representatives, as well as those on utility municipality boards...." Although the subtitle would seem to include scientists as a potential audience, those with any math or chemistry background at all would probably be better served by one of the introductory environmental engineering books. The section on "staving off privatization" is a curious addition. Good glossary and index. Overall, a good introduction to water and wastewater treatment technology for nontechnical professionals. General readers; professionals. D. A. Vaccari Stevens Institute of Technology
