Choice Review
Kempfert and Gebreselassie (both, Universitat Kassel, Germany) have extensive experience in the design of foundations and earth structures in soft soils, which are susceptible to substantial deformations during foundation construction and thereafter. They present various failure theories that have become available in recent years for modeling soft soils. Several parametric studies are given for some of the soil models. A large number of excellent case histories are presented in which field measurements are compared with analytical results. All analyses are based on the commercially available finite element program PLEXIS, and the discussions follow German Code and Eurocode. The book has a wealth of very useful information for foundation engineers, especially those confronted with complex foundation problems in soft soils. The authors rightly state that the book is intended for researchers and practicing engineers. Perhaps there is some oversight in index entries, as they do not always correspond to the listed page numbers. Quality of printing and illustrations are all very good. ^BSumming Up: Optional.
