This electronic handbook is, indeed, a reflection of the information revolution. It is very easy to install and truly user friendly, i.e., no librarian intermediation is required. Although the text involves hundreds of active mathematical formulas and illustrations, the screen display is very clear. When comparing this electronic handbook with the print editions, the main advantage of the CD-ROM is the ease with which any desired piece of information is retrieved. The process of searching or, in other words, the accessibility to concepts, ideas, and information is made simple by the navigational features, including a table of contents, menus, and submenus. A further timesaving feature of this product is that it can be linked to the MathCad engine, thus speeding up the process of actively utilizing the mathematical formulas and equations. This is another advantage of the electronic version over the print edition.[p]The program offers nine selections or choices, namely, mechanics, heat, strength of materials, gearing, engines, turbines, pumps, compressors, and references (this last area provides immediate access to relevant theoretical concepts). There is toll-free technical support.[p]There is a variety of users for this version of the handbook. For practicing professional engineers and engineering firms it is truly a must. It is also highly recommended for universities and colleges. For upper-division undergraduate and graduate students it is certainly a useful complementary tool.
