Abstract:
The use of timber in construction industry has taken a new step. Timber is utilised more extensively as compared to before and they are now being used diversely into many areas. Although construction in space structures have started decades ago, they are mainly made from steel. Timber in space structures ia a fairly new application. Their application to double layer grids is thought to have great potentials. This research focus mainly on an experimental study on a double layer grid timber space truss model. The trusses are assembled from clear ans structural size specimen timber members. The timber used is from a local medium hardwood species commonly known as Kempas. The analysis of the experimental model is made by a commercial finite element software called COSMOS/M. In the process of testing the three module space truss model, other related tests have to be carried out. The tests are on MOE, carushing strength, performance of the joint, ultimate load of a single truss ,member and ultimate load of single module space truss. failure of the models and specimens were as predicted. The ultimate load obtained from the tests were found to be higher then the predicated load.
