Summary

Summary

`Metal-Matrix Composites' are being used or considered for use in a variety of applications in the automotive, aerospace and sporting goods industries. This book contains sixteen chapters, all written by leading experts in the filed, which focus on the processing, microstructure and characterization, mechanics and micromechanics of deformation, mechanics and micromechanics of damage and fracture, and practical applications of a wide variety of metal composites.A particularly noteworthy feature of this authoritative volume is its collection of state-of-the-art reviews of the relationships among processing, microstructural evolution, micromechanics of deformation and overall mechanical response.

Choice Review

Here is a comprehensive review and enlightened commentary on the current engineering and scientific understanding of metal matrix composites. One of the objectives of this effort was to encourage future research by pointing out areas for further study. Many of the 30 research scientists and professors who wrote chapters are leaders in the field and especially qualified to write such a volume. The 16 chapters are divided into five parts: "Processing," "Microstructure Characterization," "Micromechanics and Mechanics of Deformation," "Damage Micromechanisms and Mechanics of Fracture," and "Applications." Fundamentals are stressed with an emphasis on metallurgical issues that influence properties. Clearly written, with figures and micrographs on nearly every page and extensive references after each chapter. More of an overview than a textbook, it is suitable for upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and persons working on the research and development of composites. J. E. Morral; University of Connecticut
