Summary

Summary

Prepare to pass CompTIA's new Network+ Exam! This straightforward, no-nonsense guide to installing, configuring, and troubleshooting computer networks not only prepares readers to pass the certification exam, but serves to provide information on basic computer technology to the networking professional as well. Topics are thoughtfully organized in accordance with CompTIA's test objectives, taking readers through the seven layers of OSI so readers learn how information starts at one computer and ends up at another. From there, hands-on coverage of how networks are set up and configured is provided, which transports readers out of the realm of theory and into the "real world" of networking.

Library Journal Review

As computer technology evolves, certification exams--CompTIA's Network+ and A+ are among the most popular--change to keep pace with new requirements. These two updated Network+ titles (see also Computer Media, LJ 5/1/04) cover the new 2005 exam objectives. Self-Study Guide covers the test only, while The Complete Guide serves as an exam guide, introductory networking textbook, and training tool. Self-Study Guide teaches to the test with concise, clear explanations of what readers need to know for each objective. Self-study features include chapter summaries and knowledge tests, an outline of test objectives with a "chapter to objective matrix," and test tips highlighted throughout each chapter. Recommended for all libraries to replace older, outdated guides. The more thorough Complete Guide to Networking is better at providing background and preparing well-rounded network professionals, but those just trying to pass the exam may find it intimidating. Its CD includes several short instructional videos and two practice tests with answer keys. Clear prose, chapter summaries, practice exams, and chapter glossaries aid in comprehension. Recommended for all libraries. The clear and friendly Complete Guide to A+ Certification's similar format is tied more closely to the exam. Providing a thorough introduction for aspiring computer or help desk techs, it covers both the core hardware and the operating systems technologies A+ exams and includes additional info for background and reference. Exam objectives are mapped to given chapters, and each chapter provides exam notes, summaries, and review questions. The CD contains sample video clips and practice test questions. For all libraries.
