"An Architectural History Foundation Book"

Choice Review
An essential book on the architectural history of Paris during the reign of Henri IV (1589-1610). Nowhere else are readers so well informed about the design, construction and purpose of the Place des Vosges, the Place Dauphine, together with the Pont Neuf and the Rue Dauphine, or of Henri IV's plans for the Louvre, to name only half the projects covered by this detailed and lucid account. Using a number of newly uncovered documents, which are fully transcribed in appendixes, Ballon explains the commercial, social, and political aims of the building programs. The 170 black-and-white illustrations are predominantly of plans, drawings, and maps, which indicates the author's particular interest in the concepts and originating history of the designs. The book is also provided with extensive notes and bibliography. Highly recommended for libraries serving advanced students and scholars of urban planning, Renaissance architecture and French history.-C. W. Talbot, Trinity University
