Summary

Strategic Leadership Across Cultures: The GLOBE Study of CEO Leadership Behavior and Effectiveness in 24 Countries received the 2015 University of San Diego and International Leadership Association (ILA) leadership book award for "Scholarly Rigor and Critical Thought." Unique in its focus, methodology, and impact, Strategic Leadership Across Cultures: The GLOBE Study of CEO Leadership Behavior and Effectiveness in 24 Countries is a must-have for those studying or practicing in the fields of global leadership, cross-cultural leadership, and organization studies. Reporting on research obtained during the third phase of the ten-year GLOBE project, the book examines strategic leadership effectiveness for executive and top-level management based on data from more than 1,000 CEOs and over 6,000 top management team members in 24 countries. The authors offer a series of propositions about executive leadership based on the unified theory --developed after the publication of the first GLOBE book--and empirically test these propositions. They provide evidence that leadership matters, executive leadership matters greatly, and that societal cultures influence the kind of leadership that is expected and effective.

Choice Review

This volume presents the latest results from the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) Research Project, a 20-year project empirically studying "the role of culture in leadership behavior and effectiveness." This current study builds on the works of two previous GLOBE studies (Culture, Leadership, and Organizations, CH, Mar'05, 42-4132; Culture and Leadership across the World, 2007). It focuses specifically on the effectiveness of executives across cultures as well as the practical concerns of CEOs leading a multinational workforce. Beginning with a review of relevant literature, the text outlines research methodology before presenting the findings of the study. Consistent with GLOBE's previous work, the current study is built on solid research models and broadly based data gathering. Assisted in this project by 68 co-investigators who collected data relevant to their countries, House (Univ. of Pennsylvania) and his academic coauthors studied 24 countries and more than 1,000 corporations. The study concludes with the recognition that strategic leadership demands attention to two sets of competencies: "mission critical" leadership competencies and "important leadership" competencies. Additionally, excellent leaders understand and exceed the leadership expectations of the cultures they interact with. This is a dense text, providing excellent research and valuable insights. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate, research, and professional collections. T. M. Mckenzie Gonzaga University
