Abstract:
The design of shelter is enhancing to certain activities while at the same space and time inhibit others. This especially true in the design of traditional contemporary shelter which is to satisfy its purpose, needs of its time and place. In tribal society, the design of shelter is not determined by the individual, but the individual has to design in the norms of his society. The relationship between shelter and the activities its contains is made more complex in the mass hosuing of today's urban society because the designer has no direct relationship with the people siupposed to spend their life in it. THE AIM. The main aim of this dissertation is to arrive at an understanding of this relationship in the context of family life in a malay society. It is also the intention of the writer, with the understanding gained, to arrive at an approach to the design of a shelter instrinsic to a Malay family life. The aim is concieved with realization that family institution is an important csocial institution. So it is of prime important that it is allowed to be maintain within the family living unit. Failure to provide realistic solution means the society will be burden with major social costs. THE SCOPE. The scope of this dissertation lies in two context. First; the family, and second; the living unit. METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS. In the context of family, the dissertation identify the needs of family for space. Both in the role of individuals as member of a family, and as a cultural group within the family. - for the Malays, his living unit represents not only his investment of wealth but also the center and focus of his emotional, social and cultural life. - traditionally the system of Malay family life is of the extended-family-system. The cluster of dwellings in the village is a direct expression of this value in family life. A cluster consist of households that have kinship ties with each other. In the context of living unit, is the study of evolution of Malay living spaces. - the basic Malay dwelling consist of three major spaces: the sleeping quarters, the kitchen and reception and guest area. - rituals, as related to the belief system, is a major factor in space creation; plus the need of privacy for women, the need to honour guest, other than the functional requirements. As for the situation today, findings of the dissertation is arrived at by making an analysis of existing situation, the problems faced and the way or ways they are met. The analysis is a comparative study of three different types of living unit; terrace housing, flat and individual dwellings; with two different kind of relation between the living unit and the occupants. One is public or authority-built housing and the other (individual dwellin) is owner-built. Some of the findings are: - limited space for social activities that are part of a Malay life. - privacy for women is no more an important principle of space planning - conflict of privacy in entertaining guest and family activities - function of the kitchen is limited to food preparation and cooking. The dissertation ends with a brief notes on various approaches taht havebeen developed or suggested as a feasible solution to the problem of family life and design of the shelter. Islam and the Malay in Malaysia is almost synonimous. Nearly hundred percents of Malays are muslim. Islam governs their way of life. Then, the design of living unit for a Malay family should aim at the creation of environment conducive to the family strive toward the expected way of life in ISlam. This approach should begin at the conceptual stage of design and covers the whole stages and aspects of design. And what should be the effort, is to determine the optimum kind of activities that can occur in a healthy family situation.
