Abstract:
"Information systems are the software and hardware systems that support data-intensive applications. Information systems contain many subsystems within organisations. The field of study encompasses disciplines in social science, computer science, ICTs, management, multimedia, etc. An information systems professionals mission is to turn systems into organisational values, requiring innovative, communication, technical, people, management and valuation skills. This work focuses on knowledge systems and advanced information systems, including their theoretical foundations, infrastructure and enabling technologies. Technology can be thought of as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. From the invention of the wheel to the harnessing of electricity for artificial lighting, technology is a part of our lives in so many ways that we tend to take it for granted. The use of information technology is pervasive in society. The requirement of the workforce to use this technology is increasing. Users of information technology are now expected to take personal responsibility for much of what has been handled in the past by a centralized computing services unit. While many organizations provide some user training in information technology, graduates who have an in-depth understanding of the opportunities IT capabilities can provide to their organization are in a stronger position compared to their peers without this understanding. A strong, capable Information Systems program can benefit all students in a school and provide special benefits to non-majors who desire more competence in information technology and its application to their areas of interest. The challenge of meeting human development needs while protecting the earth’s life support systems confronts scientists, technologists, policy makers, and communities from local to global levels. This work suggests that efforts to mobilize S&T for sustainability are more likely to be effective when they manage boundaries between knowledge and action in ways that simultaneously enhance the salience, credibility, and legitimacy of the information they produce. Effective systems apply a variety of institutional mechanisms that facilitate communication, translation and mediation across boundaries. Two-Volume ‘Brig’s Handbook of Methods & Research in Information and Knowledge Systems’ focuses on how these systems are engineered; to stop and think about the questions to be asked throughout the engineering process and, in particular, about the impact designers’ choices have on these systems. This therefore involves identifying the elements of the problem of decision support systems engineering: the main objects and dimensions to be considered and the relationships they involve, issues at the levels of the decision-maker, of the organization (and even of society), the general approach to which to subscribe and so on. This handbook will be of interest for researchers and professionals to enhance their knowledge and report new advances on all topics related to knowledge systems and advanced information systems."
