This long-awaited second edition of Wood's Use of Earth Science Literature (CH, Jun'74) is the new standard for bibliographic essays in this discipline. Editors Wood (British Library), Hardy (formerly at King's College), and Harvey (British Museum) have assembled contributions from 19 earth scientists and librarians. A succinct introduction by Wood and Hardy delineates scope and intent. Following a pattern similar to the first edition, sections on primary and secondary literature are followed by chapters on earth science subfields. As expected, a chapter on computerized bibliographic and data retrieval has been added, including an international directory (the term "host" is used rather than "vendor"). Typography is clear and effective, particularly in M.L. Larsgaard's selective cartobibliography and in Ann Lum's coverage of regional geology. Oceanography is treated briefly in these two chapters, so libraries may wish to acquire J.B. Barnett's Marine Science Journals and Serials: An Analytical Guide (CH, Nov'86). Printed to endure on acid-free paper, this title succeeds as an update to its first edition and to D.C. Ward's Geologic Reference Sources (CH, Nov'81). Includes subject index. Highly recommended for all academic and research libraries. -T. R. Zogg, University of Minnesota-Duluth
